What is Grey Iron?

Grey iron, also known as gray cast iron, takes its name from the grey-colored fracture surface caused by graphite flakes within its structure.

  • Composition: typically 1.5–4.3% carbon, 0.3–5% silicon, plus manganese, sulfur, and phosphorus.

4. Centrifugal Casting

Centrifugal casting is used to manufacture round and tubular components.

  • Ideal for pipes, fittings, and components that must withstand internal pressure.

  • Meets international standards such as EN877, ISO6594, ASTM A888, making it a reliable choice for infrastructure and utility systems.

5. Investment Casting

Investment casting provides superior precision and surface quality.

  • Though more expensive than other methods, it’s chosen for parts requiring tight tolerances and complex geometries.

  • Grey iron investment castings are less common, but can be an efficient solution for specialized applications where machining costs would otherwise be excessive.

4. Corrosion Resistance in Non-Pressure Systems

Grey iron offers good corrosion resistance in environments without internal pressure.

  • Widely used in EN877 soil pipes, gully gratings, and sewer systems.

  • Provides long service life with minimal maintenance in civil infrastructure applications.
